Fanning eliminato al billabong pro. slater sopravvive al secondo round

Surfcorner.it – E’ finalmente iniziato questa notte il Billabong Pro Tahiti, rimasto in stand by per i primi sei giorni del waiting period, e subito ci sono state le sorprese, con l’eliminazione del campione del mondo in carica Mick Fanning per mano del brasiliano Bruno Santos, wildcard proveniente dai trials.

Tutto il primo round è stato disputato, insieme alle prime cinque heat del secondo round. Fanning era stato relegato al secondo round, dopo aver perso la prima heat contro Pancho Sullivan, ma non è riuscito a ritrovare il ritmo per riemergere, perdendo contro il brasiliano in un duello concluso negli ultimi secondi della batteria.

Sorte simile per l’otto volte campione del mondo Kelly Slater, finito nel secondo round per mano del tahitiano Manoa Drollet al primo round. Slater è però riuscito a riemergere battendo Jamie O’Brien al secondo round e rientrando nel main event. Ora incontrerà nuovamente Drollet al terzo round.

Drollet è l’unico local nell’edizione 2008 del Billabong Pro. Spesso i locali hanno eliminato grossi nomi a Teahupoo, ma nessun locale mai ha vinto l’evento.

La heat del giorno è stata quella di Adriano de Souza, che con due profondi tubi ha preso un quasi perfetto 19.53 su 20.00, eliminando Kieren Perrow e Miky Picon.
I favoriti Andy Irons, Joel Parkinsons e Taj Burrow avanzano tutti direttamente al terzo round, mentre il numero due in classifica, Bede Durbidge è dovuto passare anch’egli attraverso il secondo round per tornare in gara.
