Slater vince il quiksilver pro e torna al vertice

Surfcorner.it – L’otto volte campione del mondo Kelly Slater ha sconfitto il campione del mondo in carica Mick Fanning nel suo home break Snapper Rock, vincendo la prima tappa del tour ASP e tornando al vertice della classifica.

E’ il secondo Quiksilver Pro vinto da Slater ed è la prima volta che torna al vertice della classifica da quando è stato incoronato campione del 2006.

Con questa finale, Slater e Fanning si sono incontrati 9 volte in competizioni ASP, con Kelly a guidare la partita per 5 a 4, nonostante non vincesse su Fanning dal 2003. Entrambi hanno ora vinto il Quik Pro per due volte: Fanning nel 2005 e 2007, Slater nel 2006 e 2008.

“Fanning è il miglior avversario al mondo in questo momento” ha detto Slater, “fa veramente pochi errori e surfa con ottimo tempismo la faccia dell’onda. E’ uno di quei surfisti che può riemergere all’improvviso e prendere il controllo, e piazzare grandi manovre con grossi punteggi quando ne ha bisogno”.

Slater ha affermato che nel 2008 gareggerà in modo selettivo e non parteciperà al prossimo evento di Bells Beach. Affermazioni analoghe le aveva fatte nel 2006, ma dopo aver vinto a Snapper era andato a Bells e lo stesso anno vinse il suo ottavo titolo.

La vittoria a Snapper non è stata comunque facile per Slater, che ha dovuto prima battere il 3 volte campione del mondo Andy Irons ai quarti, e il Rookie dello scorso anno Jeremy Flores nelle semifinali, prima di incontrare Fanning nell’ultima heat.

Sul fronte femminile è Sofia Mulanovich a imporsi sulle avversarie del Roxy Pro, battendo in finale l’australiana Samantha Cornish in onde di un metro a Snapper, appena due giorni prima della finale maschile.

Prossimo stop per entrambe le categorie maschile e femminile sarà il Rip Curl Pro a Bells Beach dal 19 al 24 Marzo.
